Join Dr. Deerheart on a literary journey to explore cultural and historical
views on death from around the world.
Shared stories have a unique way of creating connections between us.
Whether we’re reading fiction or non-fiction, books can give us a tangible framework to discuss topics our larger culture considers taboo — like death, loss, grief, love, and making the most of our finite lives.
Our book club meetings are safe spaces to wander and ponder, to share, to explore, — and to reflect on this illuminating mystery. Join us and venture into our individual and collective psyche to explore the captivating and sacred, universal ritual of death.
Each week we will take a deep dive, focusing on different sections of the book to give us an opportunity to deepen our knowledge and expand our hearts.
Our book club meetings are held online every Wednesday of the month, 5:30pm - 7:00pm Pacific.
For October's Book Club we are reading and reflecting on Being with Dying: Cultivating Compassion and Fearlessness in the Presence of Death by Joan Halifax. during discussions facilitated by Dr. Deerheart and special Co-Host Tom Daniel.
Recent book club selections have included:
- In Love: A Memoir of Love & Loss by Amy Bloom, an unforgettable portrait of a beautiful marriage, and a boundary-defying love.
- Beloved by Toni Morrison, an unflinchingly look into the abyss of slavery.
- The Death of Ivan Ilyich & Other Stories by Leo Tolstoy, features lessons on two of Tolstoy's most persistent themes: life and death.
- Advice for Future Corpses (and Those Who Love Them): A Practical Perspective on Death & Dying by Sallie Tisdale, a lyrical, thought-provoking, yet practical perspective informed by Sallie’s years as a palliative care nurse.
- The Book of Two Ways: A Novel by Jodi Picoult, explores questions including What does a life well lived look like? When we leave this earth, what do we leave behind?
- Dying to Be Me: My Journey from Cancer, to Near Death, to True Healing by Anita Moorjani and Wayne W. Dyer recounts Anita’s extraordinary near-death experience where she realized her inherent worth.
We’re excited to share this mystical offering with others who are looking to delve into their hearts and peer at death as a way to inspire them to live life more deeply.
